The Bronx Is Burning - John Mahler

I was expecting a book more about the Bronx. Mahler's easygoing book focuses on Reggie Jackson's relationship with the Yankees, looks at the '77 mayoral candidates (but mostly at Koch), and delves into the '77 blackout, spending most of his time in Brooklyn. Along with some NY media name-dropping, the book takes a closer look at the Son of Sam rather than the Bronx and the circumstances that lead to its burning.

Otherwise an entertaining read, the book fails take an intimate look at the Bronx and what was going on here in the 70's. It was an ignored borough back then, it seems, and makes it no wonder that it went to shambles. In other words, if you're looking for a book that sets up and explains how it came about that Howard Cosell looked up and said "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx is burning," while broadcasting the 1977 World Series, look elsewhere.

Let me know if you know of any good books on Bronx history in the 1970's.
