My Bloody Life - Reymundo Sanchez
Read for the PISSER book club. Right after finishing it, I was very impressed with it. A forthright testimonial about Chicago gang life, "Sanchez's" book (written under a fake name) puts in plain language how the author, an immigrant from Puerto Rico with abusive parents and a love for baseball, gets mixed up in the deadly and destructive games of gangs.
The part where the book rubs me the wrong way is that the author claims that gangs are so bad and that he just sorta fell into it, removing much of the blame that could be heaped upon him for the nasty actions that he takes part in. Furthermore, after preaching on the drawbacks of gang life, he goes on to essentially brag about all the crimes he committed and all the drugs he did and sold.
And another thing my friend Tina pointed out, the writer was a member of the Latin Kings gang, and chose as his pseudonym "Reymundo," literally "king of the world." This, coupled with the fact that the sequel to this book describes how he gets back into gang life after getting out of it at the end of the second makes one seriously question the effectiveness of this book.
