Friday Music - Animals

Been trying out new music services. Seeqpod has been great for creating playlists when I know exactly which songs I want to put on, but
I'm always on the lookout for new music. And Pandora is great for that. But, I've been trying out Slacker Radio, which has performed splendidly. So, this week's animal centric playlist brings you "the best music from Deerhoof and music from related artists like Grizzly Bear, Ponytail, and others including: Andrew Bird, Japanther, Wolf Parade, Animal Collective, Sparklehorse, Be Your Own Pet, Bearsuit, Caribou, The Dodos, Persephone's Bees and many more.

Here's the station:
http://www.slacker.com/?sid=stations/12159596/1235051446

An additional thing I like about Slacker Radio is that it seems I'll be able to continually update/tweak this station and the above link will still work. Anyway, enjoy the animals.

    Friday music 10/10

This week we hearken back to blasting trumpets, out of tune saxes, and group singing with a study of high school boy music: ska punk!

It's scary to think how much I used to like this stuff. A major shift from my mix 2 weeks ago (deeeeepressing), this one is uplifting if tiresome.

    Enjoy some:
  • Reel Big Fish
  • Catch 22
  • Dropkick Murphys
  • Flogging Molly
  • Streetlight Manifesto
  • Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution (which I love calling BotAR like my sister does)
  • MU330
  • Pogues
  • Slapstick
  • NOFX
  • Bad Religion
  • Rancid

  • I spared you (and myself) some Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

I like this week's list. Especially the last few songs. Foals a great new find. A lot of the picks this week come from Rolling Stone's list of bands who are defining rock:
    - The Hold Steady (thanks Paul!)
    - Laura Izibor
    - Low vs. Diamond
    - 3Oh!3
    - Dead Confederate
    - Santogold
    - Foals

    Some interesting new picks here:
    - Japanther
    - Ninjaspark
    - Bellafea
    - Squeeze
    - Band of Horses
    - Panda Bear
    - Of Montreal
    - Los Campesinos!
    - Justice
    - Sea Wolf
    - Ra Ra Riot

I go to see Ra Ra Riot at this year's Siren Music Festival at Coney Island, and they were awesome. Rolling Stone recently named them one of six acts who are defining rock and pop in 2008. Really interesting band story...

Anyway, enjoy last week's Friday mix (on Tuesday)....

This week's playlist features digital, new age-y, hyper, scary, and folksy stuff, including some old favorites and some great new finds:
    • Battles (playing a free show in Central Park this weekend)
    • Gang Gang Dance (opening for Battles -- not bad)
    • Black Dice (also opening for Battles and not bad)
    • Atari Teenage Riot (psycho, but old time favorite)
    • Collapsing Cities (great new find)
    • Animal Collective (takes a little getting used to, but addictive, and has withstood the test of time for me)
    • Pivot (awesome new find...am considering buying an album of theirs on iTunes)
    • Squarepusher (a little too techy/digital for my tastes, but alright)
    • Breeders (all hail the Breeders. sorry to have missed their insanely packed show at McCarren a few weeks back...)

    Friday Music - August 1

A great mix this week fostered by all the free shows this summer. Ghostland Observatory being the best so far of the mix. Saw them at their free show in Prospect Park a week or so ago along with my wife, mother-in-law, and two brothers-in-law. It was the first concert for both the bros, how cool is that? If your first concert was a Brooklyn indy show? My first show was Green Day at Nassau Colliseum. It was cool too...then...I suppose.

    This week's list features:
    - Ghostland Observatory
    - MGMT
    - Mooney Suzuki
    - Muggabears
    - Joan of Arc
    - Ponytail
    - Black Moth Super Rainbow

Posting the next two Friday playlists today, as we'll be away for the next several weeks. This week's playlist pays tribute to our arT partY last weekend, with plenty of avant garde music. Some great word-play stuff, and starts off with one of my all-time favorite pieces of music...

Some awesome classical music this Friday...not all of the "classical thunder" variety, but goot stuff nonetheless.

    http://www.seeqpod.com/music/?plid=9a62cce6d9

Features some of my favorite pieces and some of my favorite pianists -- including Martha Argerich -- amazing. And Arthur Rubinstein -- terrific. The only thing is I wish I could've found his version of the lead-in Rachmaninoff piece, op. 3 no. 2. The version I found feels too rushed. oh well. enjoy!

This week's Friday playlist has somewhat of a Halloween feel to it, I think. Not overt, but the tracks are sometimes spooky, sometimes somber. I especially like the first track by the rachel's (one of my faves). Interestingly, a new horror film features a few rachel's songs: www.cthulhuthemovie.com. First learned about these guys on New Sounds.
