Bollywood

As you can probably tell from the last few movies I've seen, I've had quite an obsession with Bollywood movies. I don't know why, though. Generally, the movies I've seen are horrible. I keep trying to figure out how/why they're so huge in India, and hyped in the press as taking aim at Hollywood. I mean, have you ever seen a Bollywood film? One star I've grown strangely fond of is Shahrukh Khan, even though he's the sappiest of all.

I've seen movies from the past ten years that he's starred in, and I can't get over a disturbing Scott Baio vibe he gives me, yet somehow, he's irresistible. His signature scenes include ridiculously windy indoor hair, quivering head signifying intense emotion, and huge huge tears welling up in his eyes in almost every scene. Barf! Must.keep.watching.

Other unmistakably Bollywood scenes include full-blown choreographed musicals out of nowhere, mismatched sound effects, dancing in the rain with saris, massive massive product placements for brands like Nautica, and Polo, and frustrating lack of passion.

I have to give Bollywood credit. I assume there are cetain scenes I don't understand due to cultural barriers. For example, I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation for this disturbing scene starring Amitabh Bachchan, the godfather of Bollywood movies:

It's from the movie Sholay, which I watched for almost three hours, wondering "Why?" the whole time. Sort of like watching Magnum P.I. -- you just want to see how crazy it will get, but it never gets as crazy as you hope. (By the way, if you checked out Bachchan's wiki, that's actually what he looks like -- with the white goatee and dyed hair).

Apparently, the mob runs Bollywood:
Bollywood Bummer.

Holy Crap! I am quite sure I saw part of Sholay (that scene specifically) while waiting for my take out at an Indian restaurant in the middle of nowhere Virginia. Are there trains in it too? Unless dancing on motorcycles is a common theme, I am pretty sure I saw it. Hilarious.

Isn't Shahrukh Khan one of the main superstars? Same with the former Miss Universe. I was going through a bit of a Bollywood interest for a bit. There is always the obligatory rain scene where the lovers are drenched in water. Again . . . hilarious.

I'm pretty sure you saw the same movie. There are a couple huge train scenes. So surreal.

Shahrukh is a major deal over there. One of the movies I saw stars both him and Aiswarya Rai (Miss Universe). He's on pratically every billboard and in every commercial in the country.

Def something addictive about those movies.

I am not of Indian background either and I find Shahrukh Khan totally fascinating. I just happened to see one of his films called Ka Ho Naa Ho and I found his dancing and seductive nature very addicting. Bollywood isn't supposed to be real...it's a fantasy. See his lastest film Om Shaati OM where in one of the movies being made in the film (it's about Bollywood actors) SRK plays a character who is blind, deaF, MUTE, ARMLESS (they were cut off is all the actor is told) and in a wheelchair who during the song from this movie inside the movie dances half nude (and with all limbs) with alot of sexy girls. So do they know it's all a joke....I believe so :)
In any case be sure to see at least some of the songs from some of SRK's films...most are very entertaining
